[EN] In her research abg: autos (self) bios (life) grafein (writing), Valentina Stepanova pushes the boundaries of her transdisciplinary documentary practice even further. More specifically, she aims to turn the spotlight on a wealth of memories, stories, objects, photographs and audiovisual material. Not only as a form of personal archaeology, but also as a reflection of broader social shifts. How does an individual memory resonate within the broader currents of history and politics? What forms can autobiographical narratives take today, in a world where collective memory and disinformation increasingly clash? How does a personal narrative relate to the normalisation of violence, the spread of ideologies and the mechanisms of forgetting? By zooming in and out between the specific and the systemic, this research aims to explore the fault lines of our time.

During her residency at nadine, Valentina Stepanova is continuing to develop a work-in-progress living installation that was previously presented at workspacebrussels, as part of her ongoing abg research: autos (self), bios (life), grafein (writing). The installation brings together a series of interconnected stations. Rather than forming a linear narrative, these stations function as autonomous yet interconnected ‘islands’, where autobiographical material, archival fragments and cultural symbols intersect.

[NL] In haar onderzoek abg: autos (self) bios (life) grafein (writing) zet Valentina Stepanova haar transdisciplinaire documentairepraktijk nog verder op de proef. Meer specifiek wil ze een scanner richten op een schat aan herinneringen, verhalen, voorwerpen, foto’s en audiovisueel materiaal. Niet alleen als persoonlijke archeologie, maar ook als spiegel voor bredere maatschappelijke verschuivingen. Hoe weerklinkt een individuele herinnering binnen de grotere stromingen van de geschiedenis en de politiek? Welke vormen kunnen autobiografische verhalen vandaag aannemen, in een wereld waar collectief geheugen en desinformatie steeds vaker met elkaar botsen? Hoe verhoudt een persoonlijk verhaal zich tot de normalisering van geweld, de verspreiding van ideologieën en de mechanismen van vergeten? Door in en uit te zoomen tussen het specifieke en het systemische wil dit onderzoek de breuklijnen van onze tijd doorgronden.

Tijdens haar residentie bij nadine zet Valentina Stepanova de ontwikkeling verder van een work-in-progress levende – installatie die eerder werd gepresenteerd bij workspacebrussels, binnen haar lopende abg-onderzoek: autos (self), bios (life), grafein (writing). De installatie brengt een reeks onderling verbonden stations samen. In plaats van een lineair narratief te vormen, functioneren deze stations als autonome maar met elkaar verbonden “eilanden”, waar autobiografisch materiaal, archieffragmenten en culturele symbolen elkaar kruisen.
