Towards, At, Through

The prepositions that make up the title of the installation refer to movements and positions of the body in relation to space. These prepositions – towards, at, through – capture the “relational dimension” that underlies this site-related work and the formal solutions developed within it.

The elements of the installation include microphones, microphone stands, audio cables, and speakers. The microphones are positioned within the space to indicate openings – cracks, passages – that connect the internal exhibition space with the external ones. The microphone stands are placed to suggest listening postures, the kind the body assumes when engaging with the acoustic space. The audio cables stretch through the space from inside to outside, making visible how sound propagates and passes through walls, surfaces, and materials. The placement of the speakers, embedded in the floor, also evokes the sound’s ability to spread and establish communication between adjacent spaces. Ultimately, the sound played back from the speakers – an edit of performative recordings made on-site – is the result of Davide approaching, lingering, and moving through the passages that link the internal space with the external ones.

The work continues Davide’s exploration of sound perception in space and the sensitivity of listening. With conceptual starkness and subtlety, Davide addresses issues of interaction and interdependence between sound, space, body, and movement.
