[EN] Towards, At, Through is an installation by Davide Tidoni presented at Out of Sight, Antwerp.

The prepositions that make up the title of the installation refer to movements and positions of the body in relation to space. These prepositions – towards, at, through – capture the “relational dimension” that underlies this site-related work and the formal solutions developed within it.

The elements of the installation include microphones, microphone stands, audio cables, and speakers. The microphones are positioned within the space to indicate openings – cracks, passages – that connect the internal exhibition space with the external ones. The microphone stands are placed to suggest listening postures, the kind the body assumes when engaging with the acoustic space. The audio cables stretch through the space from inside to outside, making visible how sound propagates and passes through walls, surfaces, and materials. The placement of the speakers, embedded in the floor, also evokes the sound’s ability to spread and establish communication between adjacent spaces. Ultimately, the sound played back from the speakers – an edit of performative recordings made on-site – is the result of Davide approaching, lingering, and moving through the passages that link the internal space with the external ones.

The work continues Davide’s exploration of sound perception in space and the sensitivity of listening. With conceptual starkness and subtlety, Davide addresses issues of interaction and interdependence between sound, space, body, and movement.

De voorzetsels die de titel van de installatie vormen, verwijzen naar bewegingen en posities van het lichaam in relatie tot de ruimte. Deze voorzetsels – naar, bij, door – geven de “relationele dimensie” weer die ten grondslag ligt aan dit locatiegebonden werk en de formele oplossingen die erin zijn ontwikkeld.

De elementen van de installatie bestaan uit microfoons, microfoonstandaards, audiokabels en luidsprekers. De microfoons zijn in de ruimte geplaatst om openingen aan te geven – scheuren, doorgangen – die de interne tentoonstellingsruimte verbinden met de externe. De microfoonstandaards zijn geplaatst om luisterhoudingen te suggereren, het soort dat het lichaam aanneemt wanneer het zich inlaat met de akoestische ruimte. De audiokabels lopen van binnen naar buiten door de ruimte en maken zichtbaar hoe geluid zich verspreidt en door muren, oppervlakken en materialen gaat. De plaatsing van de luidsprekers, ingebed in de vloer, roept ook het vermogen van het geluid op om zich te verspreiden en communicatie tot stand te brengen tussen aangrenzende ruimtes. Uiteindelijk is het geluid dat uit de luidsprekers wordt afgespeeld – een montage van performatieve opnames die ter plekke zijn gemaakt – het resultaat van Davide’s naderen, treuzelen en bewegen door de passages die de interne ruimte met de externe verbinden.

Het werk gaat verder met Davide’s verkenning van geluidsperceptie in de ruimte en de gevoeligheid van het luisteren. Met conceptuele helderheid en subtiliteit behandelt Davide kwesties van interactie en onderlinge afhankelijkheid tussen geluid, ruimte, lichaam en beweging.
