How to attune to the hidden microbial world that lives in and with the cooling towers of nuclear facilities? What new questions or perspectives emerge when we take the biofilm seriously—on its own terms— rather than focussing solely on its potential damage to concrete, steel, or lungs? Moreover, how does our/s thinking change when moving beyond frozen views of these respiratory towers and their oblique concrete lines as unwanted industrial relics that must be torn down as the nuclear facilities are phased out?
The encounter with the cooling towers of Tihange, SCK Mol, their biofilms, and the emergence of a playing field for artists, scientists, and philosophers is the core of the artistic research project ‘Koelleven’ by Bartaku art_research.
– During Plexity #3 – Salon, several “Koelleven” researchers will delve deeper into microbial death, life, the in‑between world and the movements back and forth.

Both salon and exhibition are open to anyone who wishes to reflect on being/becoming microbe, tower, and landscape.

‘Koelleven’: afstemmen op biofilmen en hun koeltorens – artistiek onderzoek
Hoe kunnen we afstemmen op de verborgen microbiële wereld die leeft in en met koeltorens van nucleaire installaties? Hoe kan dit volgens `hun´ voorwaarden ? Welke nieuwe vragen of perspectieven ontstaan wanneer we de biofilm serieus nemen —op zijn eigen voorwaarden — voorbij hun mogelijke schadelijke impact op beton, staal en long? Wanneer je de levendige koeltorens en hun oblique lijnen niet langer ziet als onwenselijk industrieel erfgoed dat zo snel mogelijk vernietigd moet worden, als deel van de ontmanteling van de nucleaire installaties?
De ontmoeting met de koeltorens van Tihange, SCK Mol, hun biofilmen en het ontstaan van een speelveld met kunstenaars, wetenschappers en filosofen is de kern van het artistiek onderzoeksproject ‘Koelleven’ door Bartaku art_research.

– En tijdens het Plexity #3 – Salon, gaan een aantal Koelleven-onderzoekers dieper in op microbiële dood, leven, de tusseninwereld en het geheen- en weer.
