[NL] Een experimentele kortfilm, geluidsperformance en een selectie werken van het kunst- en onderzoeksproces Koelleven zijn eenmalig te beleven op 8 en 10 mei 2026 in het AuroTorium van de Galaxy Studios in Mol, een  unieke zaal bekend voor haar immersieve beleving van 4k beeld met 3D-geluid.

Het meerjarige onderzoek Koelleven is uitgevoerd door een speelveld met kunstenaars, wetenschappers, filosofen in samenwerking met micro-organismen in de koeltorens van nucleair onderzoekscentrum SCKCEN in Mol. Het proces werd geïnitieerd door Bartaku Art_Research “tengevolge een toevallige verknoping van de koeltorens van Tihange met biofilms en JMW Turner”.
Koelleven onderzoekt op welke wijze verborgen levensvormen, relaties en esthetisch-elektrische spanningsvelden binnen deze industriële biotopen voelbaar gemaakt kunnen worden. Door middel van ‘afstemming’ stelt Koelleven een polycentrisch perspectief voor als alternatief voor een louter mensgerichte kijk op de realiteit. Het werk maakt de verwevenheid tastbaar tussen microbiële gemeenschappen, de koeltorens en de ademhaling.

Het twee uur durende programma in de Galaxy Studios omvat:

• Koelleven experimentele kortfilm: Dit audiovisuele experiment belicht de ontmoeting tussen mens, machine en microbe in het koeltorenbassin van het SCKCEN. (De soundtrack in het driedimensionele Auro-3D formaat werd recent gerealiseerd in Galaxy Studios.)
• Live geluidsimprovisatie door geluidskunstenaar Christophe Albertijn die de ‘way of play’ reflecteert, de werkwijze binnen het project, en hierbij de dynamiek van microbiële processen geluidsgewijs vertaalt.
• Presentatie en Dialoog: Een gesprek tussen Wilfried Van Baelen (Galaxy) en de Koelleven-kunstenaars over de kruisbestuiving tussen microbiologie, filosofie en kunst. Hierbij wordt dieper ingegaan op de wijze waarop het project bijdraagt aan het debat over onze relatie met de niet-menselijke wereld.

Bartaku Art_Research (BE/FI) is de praktijk van Bart HM Vandeput die kunstonderzoek verricht naar blinde vlekken in kennisproductie en -beleving. De onderzoeksprocessen zijn speelvelden met kunstenaars, wetenschappers, planten, microben, koeltorens, ceramiek, video-en geluid, experimentele zonnecellen, zon- en LEDlicht. Ze zijn de laatste twee decennia ontwikkeld en gedeeld in Guwahati, Oaxaca, Letland, Finland en sinds 2023 in Tihange, Mol, Antwerpen, Vorst, Gent en Hasselt.

[EN] An experimental short film, live sound track improvisation and a selection of microbial works from the art and research process Koelleven can be experienced for a one-off event on 8 and 10 May 2026 in the AuroTorium of the Galaxy Studios in Mol, a unique theater known for its immersive experience of 4K image with 3D sound.

The Koelleven multi-year research project is conducted by a playfield of artists, scientists, philosophers in collaboration with microorganisms in the cooling towers of the nuclear research center SCKCEN in Mol. The process was initiated by Bartaku Art_Research, committing to a sequence of serendipital events involving the cooling towers of Tihange, biofilms and JMW Turner.
Koelleven investigates how hidden life forms, relationships, and aesthetic-electrical tension fields within these industrial biotopes can be made palpable. Through ‘attunement,’ Koelleven proposes a polycentric perspective as an alternative to a purely human-centered view of reality. The work makes the interconnectedness between microbial communities, the cooling towers, and respiration tangible.

The two-hour program includes:

• Koelleven experimental short film: This audiovisual experiment highlights the encounter between man, machine, and microbe in the cooling tower basin of the SCK CEN. The soundtrack, in the three-dimensional Auro-3D format, was created at Galaxy Studios.
• Live sound track improvisation by sound artist Christophe Albertijn responding to the ‘way of play’, a methodology within the project that aligns with improvisational music to sonically translate the dynamics of microbial processes.
• Presentation and Dialogue: A conversation between Wilfried Van Baelen (Galaxy) and the Koelleven artists regarding the cross-pollination between microbiology, philosophy, and art. This delves deeper into how the project contributes to the debate on our relationship with the so-named more-than-human world.

Bartaku Art_Research (BE/FI) is the practice of Bart HM Vandeput, who conducts art research into blind spots in knowledge production and experience. The research processes are playgrounds involving artists, scientists, plants, microbes, cooling towers, ceramics, video and sound, solar cells, sunlight, and LED light. They have been developed and shared over the last two decades in Oaxaca, Guwahati, Latvia/Finland, Tihange, and Mol.
