[EN] Francesca Grilli is an Italian multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of the performing and visual arts. She develops her own artistic language in which performance, installation and video come together across diverse contexts. Her work directly engages the audience, both physically and through processes of symbolic metamorphosis.

At the centre of her practice is the intensity of experience, inherent to the ephemeral and immaterial nature of performance. Her work combines a strong political dimension with a conceptual language, exploring power structures, social norms and the tensions between inclusion and exclusion, participation and marginalisation. Invisibility often becomes a form of resistance against systems that recognise direct productivity and visibility as legitimate. Through voices and bodies, she creates spaces where different generations and experiences can meet, and where norms, identities and hierarchies can be reconsidered.

Memory and its reconfiguration form an important basis of her research. She explores, among other things, non-verbal cultural practices at risk of disappearing, such as oracular practices, and investigates how these forms of knowledge can be recovered, transformed and transmitted. Immaterial elements such as sound, air and fire also play an important role as materials of presence, transmission and transformation.

Her new project La Piena / The Flood, supported by the Flemish Community, builds on this research and marks a further movement of her practice towards public space, the countryside and nature. At its centre is a long-standing artistic dialogue with rivers and elemental forces. In Bleigießen (2018), developed at the Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg, a performance took place on a river, where the movement of the water did not merely function as a backdrop, but actively determined the rhythm, duration and atmosphere of the work.

With La Piena (The Flood), Francesca Grilli explores the possibility of reconnecting people with rivers through oracular practices. She herself spent a great deal of time along the Reno, a river in her home region of Emilia-Romagna, where she experienced first-hand the healing as well as destructive power of water and floods.

La Piena is a project that explores bodies of water from a hydrofeminist perspective. Through international residencies in different geographical contexts, mainly in Italy, Francesca Grilli will collaborate with rivers and their communities. For this, she draws on hydromancy (hydor meaning water and manteia meaning divination) as an artistic and ritual practice to establish a connection with water while further developing its dramaturgical dimensions.

The project aims to establish a performative and participatory instrument through which we can reconsider our position in relation to the ‘hydrocommons’, not merely as users or exploiters, but also as bodies of water participating in a cycle that flows through us, shapes us and sustains us.

Ze ontwikkelt een eigen artistieke taal waarin performance, installatie en video samenkomen, in uiteenlopende contexten. Haar werk betrekt het publiek rechtstreeks, zowel lichamelijk als via processen van symbolische metamorfose.

Centraal in haar praktijk staat de intensiteit van de ervaring, inherent aan het vluchtige en immateriële karakter van performance. Haar werk combineert een sterke politieke dimensie met een conceptuele taal en onderzoekt machtsstructuren, sociale normen en de spanning tussen inclusie en exclusie, participatie en marginalisatie. Onzichtbaarheid wordt daarbij vaak een vorm van verzet tegen systemen die directe productiviteit en zichtbaarheid als legitiem erkennen. Via stemmen en lichamen creëert ze ruimtes waar verschillende generaties en ervaringen elkaar ontmoeten en waar normen, identiteiten en hiërarchieën opnieuw kunnen worden bevraagd.

Geheugen en de herconfiguratie ervan vormen een belangrijke basis van haar onderzoek. Ze verdiept zich onder meer in non-verbale culturele praktijken die met uitsterven worden bedreigd, zoals orakelpraktijken, en onderzoekt hoe deze vormen van kennis kunnen worden hersteld, getransformeerd en doorgegeven. Ook immateriële elementen zoals geluid, lucht en vuur spelen een belangrijke rol als materialen van aanwezigheid, overdracht en transformatie.

Haar nieuwe project La Piena / The Flood, ondersteund door de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, bouwt voort op dit onderzoek en markeert een verdere beweging van haar praktijk naar de openbare ruimte, het platteland en de natuur. Centraal staat een langdurige artistieke dialoog met rivieren en elementaire krachten. In Bleigießen (2018), ontwikkeld bij het Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg, vond een performance plaats op een rivier, waarbij de beweging van het water niet enkel als decor fungeerde, maar actief het ritme, de duur en de sfeer van het werk bepaalde.

Met La Piena (De Vloed) onderzoekt Francesca Grilli de mogelijkheid om mensen terug in contact te brengen met rivieren via orakelpraktijken. Zelf bracht ze veel tijd door aan de Reno, rivier in haar thuisstreek Emilia Romagna, waar ze van dichtbij de zowel helende als vernietigende kracht van water en overstromingen ervoer.

La Piena is een project waarbij waterlichamen worden onderzocht, vanuit een hydrofeministisch perspectief. Via internationale residenties in verschillende geografische contexten, vnl. in Italië, zal Francesca Grilli samenwerken met rivieren en hun gemeenschappen. Hiervoor berust ze op hydromantie (hydor is water en manteia is waarzeggerij), als artistieke en rituele praktijk om een verbinding met het water tot stand te brengen en tegelijkertijd de dramaturgische dimensies ervan verder te ontwikkelen.

Het idee is om een performatief en participatief instrument op te zetten, waarbij we onze positie t.o.v. ‘hydrocommons’ heroverwegen, niet als louter gebruikers of exploitanten, maar ook als watermassa’s die deelnemen aan een cyclus die door ons heen stroomt, ons vormt en ons in stand houdt.
