[EN] We rake the Opal Coast like we sweep the table after a big meal. The crumbs we find are clues to past activities. Put together, they form a composition that reflects the territory. Like a painting, it paints a portrait.

At the heart of Ambleteuse’s Slack Dune, we were particularly struck by the clothes and other belongings to be found there. These remains often belonged to people attempting to cross the English Channel, leaving their belongings behind.

Over time, these remains amalgamate with other vegetal matter. We continue the weaving already begun by the wind and the sea. The intertwined fibers create relationships and intertwine narratives. Clues to the “elsewhere” of exiled people’s journeys merge with those of a “local” landscape, cohabiting in a picture of complex harmony.

[FR] On ratisse la côte d’opale comme on balaye la table après un grand repas. Les miettes que l’on y trouve sont les indices témoignant des activités passées. Misent ensemble, elles forment une composition qui reflète le territoire. Comme un tableau, elle en dresse le portrait.

Au coeur de la dune de la Slack d’Ambleteuse, nous avons été particulièrement interpellées par les vêtements et autres affaires que l’on peut trouver sur place. Ces restes ont bien souvent appartenu à des personnes qui tentent la traversée de la Manche et abandonnent derrières elles leurs effets personnels.

Sous l’action du temps, ces restes s’amalgament à d’autres matières végétales. Nous prolongeons ces tissages déjà entamés par le vent et la mer. Les fibres entremêlée viennent créer des relations et enchevêtrent les récits. Les indices « d’un ailleurs » issus du voyage des personnes exilées se fondent à ceux d’un paysage dit « local » et cohabitent dans un tableau à l’harmonie complexe.

[NL] “We harken de Opaalkust op alsof we de tafel afvegen na een uitgebreide maaltijd. De kruimels die we vinden, zijn aanwijzingen voor activiteiten uit het verleden. Samen vormen ze een compositie die het gebied weerspiegelt. Net als een schilderij schetst het een portret.

In het hart van de Slack Dune van Ambleteuse waren we vooral onder de indruk van de kleding en andere bezittingen die we daar aantroffen. Deze overblijfselen waren vaak afkomstig van mensen die probeerden het Kanaal over te steken en hun bezittingen achterlieten.

Na verloop van tijd versmelten deze overblijfselen met ander plantaardig materiaal. We zetten het weefwerk voort dat al door de wind en de zee is begonnen. De verweven vezels creëren relaties en verweven verhalen. Aanwijzingen over de ‘elders’ van de reizen van verbannen mensen versmelten met die van een ‘lokaal’ landschap en leven samen in een beeld van complexe harmonie.”, Clément Thiry & Chloé Schuiten.
