The plot centers on a woman named Vera. During an argument with her aggressive boyfriend, a passerby (a doctor) accidentally kills him. Fearing the consequences, Vera and the doctor try to cover up the incident, but their attempts lead to increasingly bizarre and comical situations. Gradually, the story unfolds into a gallery of encounters with equally confused, absurd, and touching characters—people who seem incapable of being either true criminals or true heroes.
