Soundlab #3 – Seeing Sound – curated by Caroline Daish and Julie Pfleiderer, is 10 days investigating the border between Sound and Performance.
Where do they meet? Where do the two artistic communities meet? Who manages to cross or move within both areas and how? What type of work or encounter does this create? What is the body of knowledge around this?
We would like to approach this in the context of Soundwalks inviting an expansive definition of the form Soundwalk.

First week: 14th – 18th May. 15 – 18h each day. Walking, listening, talking. Different locations moving through Brussels + Constant, nadine, Pianofabriek.
We have invited 10 artists to present a walk or talk about performance and sound, composing and using ‘found sounds’. Artists include Joanna Bailie, Paul Craenen, Caroline Daish, David Helbich, Roel Heremans, Simon Loeffler, Noid, Julie Pfleiderer, Carlotta Scioldo & Jason Sweeney.

Second week 21st – 23rd May, 10-17h: Workshop with Ant Hampton.
“Fantasy Interventions” is a workshop on imagination and writing for site-specific theatre and live urban interventions. For artists and practitioners from a wide variety of backgrounds – theatre-makers, sound artists, actors/directors, as well as choreographers, stage-designers, architects, poets and writers.
What can assist us in conceiving performance for locations outside theatre buildings? What sort of imagination is required for this kind of performance? What does it mean to balance fantasy with feasibility?
With a focus on observation imagination and writing and involving walks in the city, discussion, film and photography the workshop culminates with a series of presentations.

Soundlab #3 – Seeing Sound – gecureerd door Caroline Daish en Julie Pfleiderer, zal gedurende 10 dagen de grenzen van Sound en Performance aftasten.
Waar ontmoeten deze twee disciplines elkaar? Waar ontmoeten de artistieke gemeenschappen elkaar? Wie slaagt erin om de grens over te steken of beweegt zich op beide terreinen en hoe? Wat voor werk of ontmoetingen brengt dit teweeg? Welk kennisveld is reeds ontwikkeld?
Wij benaderen deze vragen in de context van Soundwalks – waarbij we een brede definitie hanteren van wat een Soundwalk kan zijn.

Eerste week: 14-18 mei, elke dag van 15u tot 18u. Wandelen, luisteren, praten. We verplaatsen ons naar verschillende locaties in Brussel – Constant, nadine, Pianofabriek.
10 kunstenaars presenteren een walk of talk over performance, sound, compositie en het gebruik van ‘found sounds’. De deelnemende kunstenaars zijn Joanna Bailie, Paul Craenen, Caroline Daish, David Helbich, Roel Heremans, Simon Loeffler, Noid, Julie Pfleiderer, Carlotta Scioldo & Jason Sweeney.

Tweede week 21-23 mei, 10-17h: Workshop met Ant Hampton.
“Fantasy Interventions” is een workshop over de verbeelding en het schrijven in kader van in situ theater en stedelijke live interventies. De workshop richt zich tot kunstenaars en professionelen met verschillende achtergronden – theatermakers, geluidskunstenaars, acteurs/regisseurs, choreografen, scenografen, architecten, dichters en schrijvers.
Wat kan ons helpen bij het bedenken van een voorstelling die zich buiten de schouwburg bevindt? Welke verbeelding hebben we nodig voor deze performances? Hoe balanceer je fantasie en haalbaarheid?
Met een focus op waarneming, verbeelding en schrijven bevat de workshop walks in de stad, discussie, film en fotografie en eindigt het atelier met een reeks presentaties.

10 artistes invités:discussions, expérimentes & ateliers.

Soundlab #3 – Seeing Sound – organisé par Caroline Daish et Julie Pleiderer. Le but de ce laboratoire sonore est d’explorer, 10 jours durant, la frontière entre le son et la performance.
Où les deux se rencontrent-ils ? Où se rencontrent leur deux communauté artistiques ? Qui franchit la frontière qui les sépare et comment ? Quel type d’œuvre ou de rencontre cela crée-t-il ? Quel type de connaissance en ressort ?
Nous tenterons de répondre à ces questions dans le contexte des soundwalks , tout en remettant en jeu les limites du ‘déambulations sonores’.

Première semaine : 14-18 mai, de 15 à 18 h. Marcher, écouter, discuter. Dans différents lieux en déplacement dans Bruxelles + Constant, Nadine, Pianofabriek.
Nous avons invité 10 artistes qui proposeront une déambulation ou une présentation à propos de la performance et du son, de la composition et de l’utilisation de sons trouvés. Artistes invités : Joanna Bailie, Paul Craenen, Caroline Daish, David Helbich, Roel Heremans, Simon Loeffler, Noid, Julie Pfleiderer, Carlotta Scioldo & Jason Sweeney.

Deuxième semaine : 21-23 mai, de 10 à 17 h. Atelier de Ant Hampton.
L’atelier Fantasy Interventions sera consacré à l’imaginaire et à l’écriture dans le cadre du théâtre spécifique à un lieu et des interventions urbaines. Il est destiné aux artistes et intervenants de différentes provenances : artistes sonores, comédiens et metteurs en scène, chorégraphes, scènographes, architectes, poètes, écrivains…
Qu’est-ce qui peut nous aider dans la conception de performance en dehors des théâtres traditionnels ? Quel sorte d’imaginaire est nécessaire pour ce type de performance ? Où se trouve la frontière entre la fantaisie et le faisable ?
Basé sur l’observation, l’imagination, et l’écriture, ainsi que des déambulations dans la ville, cet atelier se conclura par des présentation par les participants.

Exploring the musicality of simple physical acts.

A sort of morphology of sound, giving non-musicians and non-sound experts a starting point for understanding the elements involved in sound (frequency, noise, harmonics) and how this applies to the sounds that they might be recording or using.

The walk is part of a research that explores different formats of guiding and wayfinding within the environment, playing with different components.

Paul Craenen is a Belgian composer. He will be presenting a virtual guided tour through Klankenbos (a sound art collection in Neerpelt), and at the same time, he will reflect on sound art installations in public space.
