Thu 12/7
Working in the morning… Uploading, editing, bike repairing.. Our first morning in Czech Republic is concentrated. We decide to have lunch at the hostel and after power spaghetti we’re on our way to the next stop in Czech with five Peregrini, hoping we left the mountains behind us…
The road is long and going up and down. Pardubice is what we’re aiming for, but the backup plan is Hradec Kralove. We encounter a cold, rainy summer in Czech. The clouds in the hills that carry the rain are the darkest and beautiful we ever saw.. We also pass some old, empty warehouses. Patricks optimism keeps us going. Due to this bad weather and the hills we end up in our backup town though. A beautiful The route today was tiring, and we’re lucky and glad to get a typical Czech dish at 10:30 in the evening: meat, dumpling bread, cream and jam.
If perspective is a manifestation of human control, of mastering the unknown and of limiting the immeseurable, than how shall we call the introduction of the unknown into the familier, of the infinite into the limited?
We could call it “travel”, for example. Because travel is not about geography and kilometers, it’s about desire, about a loss and about mouvement.
In the Shop at Gallaitstraat we will open a Travel Agency. It’s a place where travel can begin, as a Travel Agency is simply a set-up that makes travel a possibilty.
The Travel Agency will try to enable travel without physical displacement (un voyage sans déplacement).
We set forth with some questions:
-What’s the minimal space needed for a travel?
-What is the difference between here and there?
-Can “elswhere” be rediscover in the “here”?
Our destination is not yet defined.
“A voyage has always already begun; its starting point can only be decided upon arbitrarily and after the fact.”
Georges Van Den Abbeele / Travel As Metaphor: From Montaigne to Rousseau
The shop residency The Travel Agency is part of the European project EITC and has been made possible with support from the European Culture Programme 2007-2013.
