[WAB] Etat des Lieux on “archives”

[EN] Etat des Lieux is a public program on sharing practices and ongoing research with an audience. The team of nadine invites collectives/artists who haven’t worked together before and invite them to shape an event around a common question.
For the upcoming Etat des lieux we embark on the theme of “archives”.
How do artists and researchers deal with archives? How can artistic methods propose alternative perspectives on uncomfortable archives making visible/audible what is otherwise not seen/heard?

This edition brings together Alice Ciresola and Simone Basani* (Am I Evil?), Olivia Ardui* (Boulevard Jacqmain) and the collective of Troubled Archives*.

During the day we will keep the following leading questions in mind:

Which position do you take towards the archive? (speculation, auto-biographic/auto-fiction approach) How do you facilitate, contextualise the (public) encounter with the archive? (self-inquiry, self-examination) How do you ask for permission to be in dialogue with that archive? (ethics, consent)

[NL] Etat des Lieux is een publiek programma waarin praktijken en artistiek onderzoek met een publiek worden gedeeld. Het team van nadine nodigt collectieven/kunstenaars uit die nog niet eerder hebben samengewerkt en vraagt hen om een evenement rond een gemeenschappelijke vraag vorm te geven.
Voor de komende Etat des lieux gaan we aan de slag met het thema ‘archieven’.
Hoe gaan kunstenaars en onderzoekers om met archieven? Hoe kunnen artistieke methoden alternatieve perspectieven bieden op ongemakkelijke archieven, waardoor zichtbaar/hoorbaar wordt gemaakt wat anders niet gezien/gehoord wordt?Deze editie brengt Alice Ciresola en Simone Basani (Am I Evil?), Olivia Ardui (Boulevard Jacqmain) en het collectief Troubled Archives (met Brenda Bikoko en Antje Van Wichelen) samen.Gedurende de dag houden we de volgende leidende vragen in gedachten:
Welk standpunt neem je in ten opzichte van het archief? (speculatie, autobiografische/autofictieve benadering) Hoe faciliteer en contextualiseer je de (publieke) ontmoeting met het archief? (zelfonderzoek, zelfreflectie) Hoe vraag je toestemming om in dialoog te gaan met dat archief? L’équipe de nadine invite des collectifs/artistes qui n’ont jamais travaillé ensemble auparavant et les invite à organiser un événement autour d’une question commune.
Pour le prochain Etat des lieux, nous abordons le thème des « archives ».
Comment les artistes et les chercheurs traitent-ils les archives ? Comment les méthodes artistiques peuvent-elles proposer des perspectives alternatives sur des archives inconfortables, rendant visible/audible ce qui ne l’est pas autrement ?

Cette édition réunit Alice Ciresola et Simone Basani (Am I Evil ?), Olivia Ardui (Boulevard Jacqmain) et le collectif Troubled Archives (avec Brenda Bikoko et Antje Van Wichelen).

Au cours de la journée, nous garderons à l’esprit les questions suivantes :
Quelle position adoptez-vous vis-à-vis des archives ? (spéculation, approche autobiographique/autofictionnelle) Comment facilitez-vous et contextualisez-vous la rencontre (publique) avec les archives ? (introspection, auto-examen) Comment demandez-vous la permission d’entrer en dialogue avec ces archives ? (éthique, consentement)

*Simone Basani (artist and curator) and Alice Ciresola (curator) conceive collaborative and performative formats from a decolonial and intersectional perspective. Am I Evil? is a collective exploration of the intersection between desire and colonialist cultures, unfolding through erotic autofictional writing. The figure of trader and collector Jeanne Walschot serves as a starting point to critically observe how whiteness operates. The project uses a peer-to-peer editing method and nourishes itself with the collection of research questions, resonances, and notes. The written texts form an archive in constant growth.

*Olivia Ardui (artist & curator) initiated the project Boulevard Jacqmain – named after Irène Hamoir’s crime novel in which she stages her surrealists companions as criminals and sex workers in the center of Brussels. Her fiction is understood as an unspoken archive, a piece of evidence to approach Brussels and its artistic millieu, through surrealist methodologies, games and gatherings.

*Troubled Archives is a collective with Rokia Bamba (sound artist) & Antje Van Wichelen (visual artist), Loes Jacobs (nadine), Peggy Pierrot (researcher) and Brenda Bikoko (researcher).

The collective takes 19th century colonial photograhy as a starting point for its activities, artistic production, and gatherings. Through sound, workshops, and debates,Troubled Archives seeks to question and redress/reshape ou way of looking.
