[EN] How can we think about territory beyond the logics of war—beyond conquest, colonisation, ownership and defense? 

THE SPINE welcomes people to immerse their bodies into the landscape, becoming active and regenerative agents in the medicinal tapestry of the surrounding ecosystems.

THE SPINE derives from the Latin spina, meaning both “backbone” and “thorn”. It generates objects that bring to light the silenced histories of territories, catalyzing the need to recognize the earth as a sentient being and our presence, as fibers braided into its living topographies.

THE SPINE’s maquette and practice, are located in Isabel’s family garden in the Belgian countryside. It will open its doors in the summer of 2025 to welcome visitors who wish to explore and nourish the world it envisions—before it travels to other places.

[NL] Op welke manieren kunnen we het idee van grondgebied herdenken—buiten het kader van oorlog, koloniale overheersing, bezit en militarisering?

THE SPINE nodigt mensen uit om hun lichaam onder te dompelen in het landschap, en zich als actieve, regeneratieve deelnemers te verbinden met het helende weefsel van de omringende ecosystemen.

Afgeleid van het Latijnse spina – wat zowel “ruggengraat” als “doorn” betekent – brengt THE SPINE objecten voort die verzwegen geschiedenissen van plekken zichtbaar maken. Het fungeert als katalysator voor het besef dat de aarde een voelend wezen is, en dat wij, als vezels, verweven zijn in haar levende topografieën.

De maquette en de praktijk van THE SPINE wortelen in de familietuin van Isabel, gelegen op het Belgische platteland. In de zomer van 2025 opent het zijn deuren voor bezoekers die de wereld die het oproept willen ervaren en voeden – voordat het zich verder verplaatst naar nieuwe locaties.
