[EN] Dia-Exit is an interactive installation by Steven Jouwersma that will be shown for one month at dinAvitrine.
In an era where photographic memory is built up so fast, and without thought, what meaning do images still retain over time?
The artist built a special projection device that allows passersby to view slide pictures for the very last time before they are destroyed. The machine is activated with a button that is accessible from the street side. Each time a new picture appears, the previous slide goes into a shredder.
Steven Jouwersma started this project in 2007. He collected the slides from families in the Netherlands and Belgium, in exchange for apple pie. Most of the slides they had inherited from relatives, but they didn’t really know what to do with them. Jouwersma had a conversation with them about the origin of these pictures and made a video, which will also be featured in the vitrine.
DIA-EXIT is a work with great ambiguity. Jouwersma shows us slides that are beautifully melancholic and gives us an unusual insight in people’s personal lives. Although sometimes you desire not destroy the slide, the desire to see the next insightful picture is even greater, resulting in an audience that will always, reluctantly, push the button.
