^Koelleven is an art & research project that investigates & expresses ways to attune with microbiota that are thriving in natural draft cooling towers of nuclear power facilities. The project aims to make tangible the tensions that surface by relating microbial econiches and industrial bodies that are on the verge of disappearing in the phasing out of nuclear power. To this end, ^Koelleveninterweaves the realms of microbiology, physics art and philosophy into a risky tapestry of inquiry. Attunement is deployed then as a mechanism to analyse and shape both artistic and scientific processes on microbial biodiversity, metabolic and respiratory responses to shifting environmental conditions as well as intra- and interspecies signalling and becoming.

The cooling tower microbiomes are situated in Belgium whereas the research biotopes span across Belgium and Finland.

Ultimately, ^Koelleven aims to contribute to the grounding of ongoing conversations on ways of entangling with the other-than-human. And the role that artists play herein when exploring realities stuffed with ever morphing becomings through transversal art and science collaborations.

[NL] ^Koelleven is een kunst- en onderzoeksproject dat manieren onderzoekt om te leren van microbiota ambieert die gedijen in natuurlijke ontwerpkoeltorens van kerncentrales. Het project wil de spanningen tastbaar maken die aan de oppervlakte komen door microbiële biotopen te relateren aan energie-installaties die op het punt staan te verdwijnen door de uitfasering van kernenergie.

Daartoe verweeft ^Koelleven de gebieden van microbiologie, natuurkunde, kunst en filosofie tot een avontuurlijk proces gebaseerd weefsel. `Afstemming´ wordt hierbij ingezet als een manier om zowel artistieke als wetenschappelijke processen rond microbiële biodiversiteit, bio-communicatie en veranderende milieuomstandigheden te analyseren en vorm te geven. De microbiomen van de koeltorens bevinden zich in België, terwijl de onderzoekscentra zich over België en Finland uitstrekken.

^Koelleven wil een bijdrage leveren aan het scherpstellen van denken en doen in de relatie tussen de mens, micro-organismen- en biotopen. Tegelijk ambieert dit project om de rol van de kunsten en haar methoden in complexe discipline-overschrijdende methoden te accentueren.
