[EN] Sara Manente is bringing her current research within three collective projects together in Brussels. With a team of artists and practitioners, she is setting up an exhibition at n0dine, which will ‘grow’ in October and November 2023.
This presentation fuses different aspects of her work: the potential of mycelium as a building material, the concept of autoimmunity, the relationship between old and new technologies, and the performative aspect. 

RUINED, a project in collaboration with Deborah Robbiano and Sébastien Tripod, involves building with mycelium on an architectural scale, embracing experimentation, curiosity and chance. The archetype of the Greek column with capitals is taken as a starting point for a modular construction that grows in various contexts. After a construction episode in Lausanne and an exhibition in the ROT GARDEN at far° Nyon, the columns travel to n0dine in Brussels and become part of a growing exhibition. With the help of Zoé Aymon, they constructed, a transparent chamber, as an incubator to inoculate with mycelium 6 new molds that will continue to grow over the duration of the exhibition. The growing components are the prototype for a future iteration of the project at Kunstmuseum Bochum.

The installation and exhibition takes further shape by adding two elements – A.I. and basket weaving – a confrontation between old and new technologies which Manente explores with MuSa. For this, Manente is collaborating with Muna Mussie and Christophe Albertijn. As a whole, the installation will form a temple with a kind of oracle: visitors can enter and interact with the installation.

Each week, different elements and materials will be added to the exhibition, synchronised with the slow rhythm of the mycelium. There will be a public moment of reading and one of de-moulding.

By the end of this period, edible mushrooms might have sprouted and could be eaten. During the finissage on the 11th of November, people will be invited to taste a chaga drink especially made by Agnese Krivade. We will then walk on to rile*, where issue one the magazine ROT – IMMUNITY – will be launched, followed by an evening with a performance by Natasha Papadopolou, cocktails of Michelle Anay Woods and music by Roberta Miss.

ROT is a magazine that encourages research and reflection around a community of artists and of practices around the theme of “immunity” and “autoimmunity”. Mycelium and ruins are also central to the project. ROT is both an editorial and performative project.

[NL] Sara Manente brengt haar lopend onderzoek binnen drie collectieve samen in Brussel. Met een team van kunstenaars en ‘beoefenaars’ zet ze een tentoonstelling op in n0dine, die in zal ‘groeien’ in oktober en november 2023. Deze presentatie laat de verschillende aspecten van haar werk versmelten: het potentieel van mycelium als bouwmateriaal, het concept van autoimmuniteit, de relatie tussen oude en nieuwe technologiëen, en het performatieve aspect.

Met RUINED, een project in samenwerking met Deborah Robbiano en Sébastien Tripod, wordt er met mycelium gebouwd op architecturale schaal, waarbij experiment, nieuwsgierigheid en toevalligheden worden omarmd. Het archetype van de Griekse zuil met kapitelen vormt het startpunt voor een modulaire constructie die in diverse contexten groeit. Na een constructiefase in Lausanne, en een tentoonstelling in de ROT GARDEN op far° Nyon, reizen de zuilen naar n0dine in Brussel en worden ze deel van een groeiende tentoonstelling. Met de hulp van Zoé Aymon bouwden ze een transparante kamer, als incubator om 6 nieuwe kapitelen met mycelium te inoculeren die tijdens de duur van de tentoonstelling zullen blijven groeien. De groeiende onderdelen zijn het prototype voor een toekomstige iteratie van het project in het Kunstmuseum Bochum.

De installatie en tentoonstelling krijgt verder vorm door toevoeging van twee elementen – A.I. en het weven van manden – een confrontatie tussen oude en nieuwe technologieën die Manente onderzoekt met MuSa. Hiervoor werkt zij samen met Muna Mussie en Christophe Albertijn. In zijn geheel zal de installatie een tempel vormen met een soort orakel: bezoekers kunnen binnentreden en interageren met de installatie.

Elke week worden andere elementen en materialen toegevoegd aan de tentoonstelling, synchroon met het langzame ritme van het mycelium. Er zal een lezing zijn een moment voor het ‘ontmallen’, in aanwezigheid van publiek.

Aan het einde van deze periode kunnen er eetbare paddenstoelen zijn ontsproten, en dus gegeten worden. Tijdens de finissage op 11 november wordt het publiek uitgenodigd om een speciaal door Agnese Krivade gemaakt chaga drankje te proeven. Daarna lopen we door naar rile*, waar nummer één van het tijdschrift ROT – IMMUNITY wordt gelanceerd, gevolgd door een avond met een performance van Natasha Papadopolou, cocktails van Michelle Anay Woods en een concert van Roberta Miss.

ROT is een magazine dat onderzoek en reflectie stimuleert omtrent een gemeenschap van kunstenaars en van praktijken rond het thema “immuniteit” en “auto-immuniteit”. Mycelium en ruïnes staan eveneens centraal in het project.
ROT is zowel een redactioneel als een performatief project.
