[EN] Sara ten Westenend (NL, 1978) is a visual artist who works and lives in Brussels. Her work consists of installations, texts and photographs that are always in dialogue with the given context in which they are presented. Her abstract visual language combines modernist elements with humour. Using this language of forms, textures and literature, she tries to untangle and confront subjective and objective relations and attitudes.

In 2012 she founded the collective ceci with Maaike Gottschal (NL) and Miriam Rohde (DE/BE) which offers an environment to work together outside their individual trajectories and professional backgrounds (visual arts, architecture, textile, writing and teaching).

An ongoing research into the concept of dialogue led to the exhibition ]EACH[ ANOTHER SELF at nadine in 2019. The in situ work was an installation of which parts were supported by the exhibition space itself. With this shaky and at the same time accurate construction she wanted to make room for doubt. The conversation that took place between different surfaces – wood, ceramics, text, colour – was a pivotal point between looking and reading and reflected questions both from her as a maker as well as from the viewer. The exhibition could be seen as a question: “What do you think I’m like?”.

In September 2020, exactly one year later, she again presents work at nadine in the solo exhibition “We need to talk”.

The theme of ‘doubt’ that she touched in her first exhibition, will be explored further in the upcoming show. “Every idea must be vulnerable.”, from Unfolding Meaning by David Bohm. ‘Vulnerable’ as in, visible from several sides, temporary and negotiable.

The exhibition explores the idea of the sculpture as a space, or rather the sculpture as an area (‘gebied’) where the spectator is part of.

[NL] Sara ten Westenend (NL, 1978) is beeldend kunstenaar en werkt en woont in Brussel. Haar werk bestaat uit installaties, teksten en foto’s die steeds in dialoog gaan met de gegeven context waarin ze worden gepresenteerd. Haar abstracte beeldtaal combineert modernistische elementen met humor. Aan de hand van vorm, textuur en tekst worden subjectieve en objectieve relaties ontward, maar ook geconfronteerd met elkaar.

In 2012 richtte ze samen met Maaike Gottschal (NL) en Miriam Rohde (DE/BE) het collectief ceci waardoor samengewerkt kan worden buiten de individuele trajecten en professionele achtergronden (beeldende kunst, architectuur, textiel, schrijven en lesgeven).

Een onderzoek naar het concept van de dialoog leidde tot de tentoonstelling ]EACH[ ANOTHER SELF in n0dine in 2019. Het in situ werk was een installatie waarvan delen werden ondersteund door de tentoonstellingsruimte zelf. Met deze wankele en tegelijkertijd nauwkeurige constructie wilde ze ruimte maken voor twijfel. Het gesprek dat plaatsvond tussen verschillende oppervlakken – hout, keramiek, tekst, kleur – was een scharnierpunt tussen kijken en lezen en reflecteerde vragen van zowel haar als maker als van de toeschouwer. De tentoonstelling kon worden gezien als een vraag: “Wie denk je dat ik ben?”

In september 2020, precies een jaar later, presenteert ze de solotentoonstelling “We need to talk” eveneens in n0dine.

Het thema ‘twijfel’ dat ze in haar eerste tentoonstelling heeft aangeraakt, wordt in de komende tentoonstelling verder uitgediept. “Every idea must be vulnerable.”, Unfolding Meaning by David Bohm. Kwetsbaar als in, van meerdere kanten zichtbaar, tijdelijk en bespreekbaar.

De tentoonstelling verkent het idee van de sculptuur als een ruimte, of beter gezegd de sculptuur als een gebied waar de toeschouwer deel van uitmaakt.
